BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS OF VOLUNTEER ROLES

WARM-UP AND RING STEWARDS – (DRESSAGE, SHOW JUMPING, CROSS COUNTRY)
Dressage, show jumping and cross country stewards are needed for the smooth running of the competition. The steward keeps the order of competitors running at the correct times and also points riders in the direction of their arena. There may be two or three stewards working alongside each other.

DRESSAGE SCRIBE
A dressage scribe will sit with the dressage judge in their car or cabin and write down the comments and marks that the judge gives. Your job is to take notes and make sure all the correct blanks are filled in (score and comment- if given- for every movement, judge’s signature). A basic understanding of dressage is useful as some terms specific to the discipline may be used.

DRESSAGE SCORE RUNNER
The runner transports completed scoresheets to the scoring booth.

CROSS COUNTRY STARTER
Start riders on their cross country rides, and announce them on radio. Maintain the flow of riders from warm-up to start box. Maintain a safe time interval between riders on course. Keep radio contact with Control to be aware of incidents or holds on course, and control rider flow appropriately.

CROSS COUNTRY FENCE JUDGE
Observe each competitor at a jump, determine if any faults occur, record the appropriate penalties on your scoresheet, and report to control via radio. You will be given a thorough briefing in the morning, including scoring, explaining the stopping procedure and things to watch out for.
